  If a corporation is vertically integrated, that means that it produces everything it needs internally. This is considered to be a Bad Thing for free markets because it decreases the amont of money changing hands, while decreasing competition because the vertically integrated company can be so financially efficient. In the academic world, vertical integration is considered a Good Thing for the same reasons.
